Eighth grade science is an integrated science course with elements of earth, life, and physical sciences, with a greater emphasis on the physical sciences. Over the course of the year, we cover topics from atoms to galaxies, and many topics in between. Here is a brief outline of the year, by month:
August - nature of physical science, science tools and measurement
September- Matter, chemical and physical properties of matter, elements, compounds and mixtures, density/buoyancy, chemical/physical changes, states of matter
October- atoms, atomic theory, Periodic Table of elements, begin science fair projects
November- chemical bonding, chemical reactions, continue science fair projects
December- pH, carbon chemistry, science fair projects continued (almost finished)
January- science fair, force and motion - speed, acceleration, inertia, and friction
February- force and motion continued (Newton's Laws)
March- formation of the solar system, moon phases, other moons in our solar system, planets and other bodies in the solar system
April- planets and other bodies in the solar system (continued), stars and galaxies
May-STAR testing, sex ed
June- electricity, electromagnetism
Grading policy:
Tests = 35 %
projects/ classwork = 20%
journal = 25%
homework = 20%
