Class Guidelines and Procedure

Dear Students/ Parents/ Guardians:
Welcome to the SPANISH SPEAKING WORLD. I am excited to be your Spanish Teacher. I want to help you succeed. Please sit down with your parents or guardian to review the Class Guidelines and Procedures for this class.

Principles of the class: I the teacher must obey these principles just as you the students must obey them.
Respect- “Due regard for wishes, rights, or traditions of others.” Respect yourself. Respect others. Respect personal property. Respect school rules.

Responsibility- “The state or fact of being accountable or to blame for something.
- The opportunity or ability to act independently and make decisions independently.” Only you are responsible for your actions.
Honesty- “The quality of being honest.”
Achievement- “A thing done successfully, typically by effort, courage, or skill.”

Policies Regarding:
Late Work/homework- You have one opportunity to turn in late work each semester. After this free opportunity, there will be no other chance to turn in late work unless you have an excused absence.
Absences- Excused absences only. Unexcused absence = 2% drop in participation grade.
Homework Completion-Homework will be given daily. It must be completed by the next day.
Unprepared students-Everyday you must have a pen or pencil, three-ring binder, and paper to take notes on. You must also have your textbook and work book. Unprepared students are marked off on their participation grade.
Cheating-Cheating is not allowed. If caught cheating student will move to Natural Consequence #4.
Rudeness: Rudeness is not allowed. Students must respect other students’ opinions and right to learn.
Tardies: You will be allowed two tardies before it affects your participation grade.

Natural Consequences:
1- Warning
2- Write out class principles and policies. Phone call to parent.
3- Teacher conference
4- Detention. Phone call to parent
5- Office referral.

Positive Consequences:
Personal satisfaction of a job well done!
Very happy teacher and praise!
Extra participation points and rewards!
Name entered into drawing for free homework pass!

All assignments will be graded on a point system. The following is how your grade will be decided:

Exams and Quizzes: 30%
Homework, class work, and activities: 40%
Cultural Projects: 20%
Participation, Attendance, Citizenship: 10%

Exams and Quizzes: 30%
A quiz will be given in the middle of each chapter and an exam will be given at the end of each chapter. Some of the tests will include vocabulary, listening skill, and writing skills assessments. It is your responsibility to make arrangements with me to make up the test either after school or during lunchtime if you have an excusable absence. You will have double the amount of days you were absent to make up the exam or quiz.

Homework and class work: 40%
Homework assignments will be given almost every day. I will check in homework at the beginning of every class and I will record it as completed. Credit will be received only if assignment is fully completed. Homework that is not fully completed will not receive any points. I will periodically collect the class work. Grade for homework and class work is not based on how many problems were correct, but rather if it was completed or not. After you have received credit for completing it, we will correct it as a class, where you will hear and learn explanations to all the answers.

Projects: 20%
A project is an assignment where more time is allowed for it (usually 2 to 4 weeks), and that requires you to do some research. In this class, projects will usually be cultural projects in which the objective is to learn more about other Spanish speaking cultures. They will be shared or presented to the class by sharing them or displaying them, or both. Because projects take more time than homework, they will be worth more. If the project involves a group project, your grade will be based on your cooperation with your group. Every member is expected to do an equal share.

Participation: 10%
You will be evaluated for your participation in discussions, simulation, class activities, and group work. I have a fast and easy system of keeping track of all the students I randomly call, whether they participated or not, and whether they are on task and not disrupting. In this kind of class where you will be learning a language, it is very important that you get a lot of practice speaking the language. That is why a lot of sharing answers, discussions, and activities will be done using the language, and you are expected to participate, cooperate, and follow the class rules that were discussed in the rules sheet.

Attendance:

Attendance is very important, because nothing can make up for a missed day of learning in our class because we cover so much material and we get a lot language practice in one day. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to come to me if you want to make up the homework or a test (review rules for excused make up homework and tests in the sections above). I keep a record of absences and tardies, and I follow the school guidelines strictly. If your absence is excused by parent and school, your attendance grade will not be affected. For every unexcused absence, your attendance grade will drop 2%.
