In 2006, by a 71% margin district voters generously approved Measure I, the Safe Local Schools Bond. The purpose of the measure isto repair our aging facilities, replace old buildings and build a new high school. Our goal is to create safe, inspiring learning environments for our children to prepare them for 21st century opportunities.
The project list for the $15,000,000 measure is:
- Repair and renovate La Honda Elementary School
- Repair and renovate Pescadero Elementary School
- Repair and renovate the current high school facility and relocate Pescadero Middle School there
- Design and construct a new district high school
- Relocate the district office and central kitchen
The modernization projects at the three schools began in June 2007 but became mired in a series of problems due to lack of regulatory compliance and funding problems. Construction was stopped in 2008-2009 and is currently on hold.
The Governing Board established a Bond Oversight Committee to: 1) review district expenditures to ensure that (a) bond proceeds are expended only for the purposes set forth in the ballot measure; (b) no bond proceeds are used for any teacher or administrative salaries or other operating expenses, (c) bond proceeds are maximized.
In addition to bond funding, the District continues to seek outside sources of funding to maximize tazpayers' support. We have applied for matching state funds for modernization and new construction costs through the Office of Public School Construction. We are also seeking corporate and private donations to extend the bond monies.
